Copywriters are people who like to write. I have been contacted by people who have seen my ads on Facebook, who seem to think that I operate like a psychic. “Don’t tell her anything, and let’s see what magic she can come up with.” If I were a psychic that would make my job very easy, unfortunately I am not, so I need as much information as possible, if I am to help you.
Here’s how to hire a copywriter in 5 easy steps:
Step 1 Make Contact
If you have made contact via a Facebook page or a website , congratulations, you are well on your way to hiring a Copywriter!
Step 2 Talk it out
I will arrange a time to talk. By talking, I mean a real conversation over a phone, or another platform like Zoom.
Step 3 Question time – The Creative Brief
While we are chatting I will be taking notes and asking you many questions. Copywriting is about writing for humans, so I will need to know exactly what sort of humans you will be targeting with your product or service.
Other questions I will probably ask, include:
- What tone do you wish to convey? (warm, friendly, businesslike)
- What do you want your client to do? (Buy something, call you, ask for a quote, ask for a meeting?)
- Do you have any testimonials? Is your product or service seasonal?
- Are there any essential requirements that must appear in any written copy? (trademarks, logos, disclaimers)
- What is the most important message you would like to leave in the consumers mind?
- What are the features and benefits of your product or service?
Step 4 The cost
Once we have had the talk, and only after the talk, can I then give you an idea of cost. Everything up to this point has been cost free. I will ask you if you have a budget in mind so I can then work with you, moving forward. This may take a day or so. Once the quote has been finalised I will present it to you in writing.
Step 5 Accept the quote
If you are happy with my initial proposal and the price is right we can start working together. The quote will become an agreement between us and we can discuss payment options. In many cases where I am writing regular posts, the payments will be on a monthly basis. If it is a one-off, I will provide you with up to 3 edits and payment will be within 14 days of completion.
In a healthy client/copywriter relationship, like real life relationships, there needs to be a continued dialogue. If you don’t like something I have written, let me know and I can change it.
So, take the first step, and make contact. The worst thing that can happen is we end up having a conversation. I’m up for it, if you are!
