How to write a blog – The 10 Commandments

A blog is a great marketing tool for any business. It can help you connect with your customers by providing them with useful tips which will increase sales. Blogging is one of the most popular ways to reach an audience because it is so easy and cost-effective.

Stay ahead of the curve

A well-written blog will keep your customers and potential customers informed of new products, services, deals, or events. It will help you to keep an eye on competition so you always you stay one step ahead. Blogging will help build trust with your audience through transparency in the form of honesty and openness.  Who doesn’t love to see what happens behind the scenes?

A window to your business

A blog is a window to your business with a more personal touch.   This will allow your clients to feel they are a part of your team.  The benefits of a blog are endless and include increased traffic to your website due to Google search engine optimization (SEO) rankings. It will provide more information for potential business partners who might be interested in partnering with you.

The 10 Commandments of blogging:

  1. Make up an interesting snappy title and make sure it contains some commonly searched for words, to boost your SEO.
  2. Only make it as long as it needs to be – 600 should be your minimum but if you have more to say, then say it.
  3. Produce original content – don’t be tempted to copy content from other sources. Own it!
  4. Be consistent – You should aim for one blog post a month, at the very least. A fresh website, means more traffic!
  5. Write for humans – You are a human and you want to do business with other humans.
  6. Use photos/graphics – if at all possible take your own photos, if this is not possible, purchase good quality images.
  7. Break up the text – headings not only help with your SEO, they make your blog easier to read.
  8. Educate and entertain – teach your customer-base something new, or tell them a story that engages.
  9. Remember it’s not all about you – It’s great to share something about yourself but make it relevant and interesting.
  10. Put it on your website – A website is essential and you don’t have to spend a fortune to get started.
